We didn't build FindPrices because the world needed another shopping site. We built it because the existing ones were broken. Frustrated by ads masquerading as results, we decided to engineer a solution that returns to the roots of the internet: honest, raw data.
The Problem Was Personal
Like most people, I used to trust Google Shopping. Type in a product name, click the first few results, and assume I was getting a good deal.
One day, I was shopping for a camera lens. Google showed me five retailers, all priced between $789 and $849. I almost clicked "Buy Now" on the $789 option.
But something made me pause. I opened a new tab and manually searched for the same lens on a photography forum. Someone had posted a link to a smaller retailer I'd never heard of: $629.
Same lens. Same warranty. Same shipping time. But $160 cheaper.
That retailer didn't show up in Google Shopping because they didn't pay for placement. They weren't sponsored. They didn't have a massive ad budget.
They just had the best price.
The Realization
This wasn't an isolated incident. I started digging deeper:
- Headphones I almost bought for $249 were $189 at a niche audio retailer
- Running shoes "on sale" for $119 were $94 at an outlet store
- A laptop listed at $1,299 was $1,099 at the manufacturer's direct site
Every single time, the better price came from a retailer that either didn't advertise or couldn't afford to compete with the big players for ad space.
The pattern was clear: the best deals were being hidden by the economics of online advertising.
How Did We Get Here?
The early internet was different. Search engines showed you results based on relevance, not revenue. Comparison sites actually compared prices instead of just listing their affiliate partners.
But somewhere along the way, the incentives broke.
Google realized they could make billions by auctioning off search results. Comparison sites realized they could make more money by only showing retailers who paid affiliate commissions. And smaller retailers got squeezed out entirely.
The user, the person actually trying to save money, became an afterthought.
What We Believe
We believe the internet should work for you, not for advertisers.
We believe the best price should win, not the biggest marketing budget.
We believe transparency isn't optional. It's the foundation of trust.
And we believe that if you're going to spend your money, you deserve to know if there's a better option out there.
How FindPrices Is Different
Here's what makes us different from every other price comparison tool:
1. We Don't Rank by Revenue
Most comparison sites show you results based on who pays them the most. We show you results based on who has the lowest price. Period.
2. We Don't Hide Retailers
If a retailer has the best price, we show them. Even if they're small. Even if they don't pay us. Even if you've never heard of them.
3. We're Transparent About How We Make Money
We earn affiliate commissions when you buy from some retailers. But we never let that dictate our results. The lowest price always appears first, regardless of whether we earn anything from that retailer.
4. We Don't Sell Your Data
Your search history is yours. We don't track you across the web. We don't sell your data to advertisers. We don't build profiles on you.
The Technology Behind It
Building a truly neutral price comparison tool isn't easy. Here's what we had to solve:
- Crawling thousands of retailers - Big and small, mainstream and niche
- Matching products accurately - The same item can have different names, SKUs, and descriptions across retailers
- Real-time pricing - Prices change constantly. Stale data is useless data
- Filtering out scams - Not every low price is legitimate. We verify retailers before showing results
We built custom algorithms to handle all of this. And we did it without compromising on our core principle: show the user the truth.
What Success Looks Like
For us, success isn't about traffic or revenue. It's simpler than that.
Success is you finding a better price you wouldn't have found otherwise.
Success is a small retailer getting a sale because they earned it with competitive pricing, not because they bought ad space.
Success is proving that honest comparison shopping can still exist on the modern internet.
The Early Internet Had It Right
There was a brief window in the early 2000s when the internet actually worked the way it was supposed to.
Search engines showed you the most relevant results. Comparison sites showed you the cheapest prices. Forums and blogs gave you unbiased advice.
Then monetization took over. Ads became more important than answers. Affiliates became more important than accuracy. Growth became more important than trust.
We're not naive. We know we can't turn back the clock. But we can build tools that honor the original promise of the internet: information without bias.
