How Much Are Hearing Aids in the UK?

Private is a pair + fitting + aftercare bundle. NHS is free after GP referral. The sticker aid is not the price.

Also for: US · AU

UK hearing aids are sold two ways. NHS is free after a GP referral: device, fitting, batteries, repairs, follow-up. Private is almost never the sticker aid. It is a pair plus the test plus the fitting plus a run of aftercare, quoted as one number. Compare the all-in package against the free NHS route. Do not compare a device-only mail-order box to an NHS loan, and do not compare a per-ear number to a per-pair number.

Example all-in by route, not technology bands. Assumptions (examples, not a tariff): written quote for two aids; hearing test included or free; fitting and first programming in; VAT-relieved where the aid qualifies.

Every pound is an example. Specsavers published start from £500 a pair and Boots Hearingcare from £595 a pair (3 Sep 2026) sit at the bottom of private mid. They are still bundles. Specsavers rechargeable from £1,000; Boots Hearingcare rechargeable from £1,295 (3 Sep 2026). NHS.uk last reviewed 18 Oct 2023: free long-term loan after GP; usually BTE. They still talk private as £500–£3,500+ for a single aid — that per-ear framing is the trap. High-street UK quotes are per pair.

NHS vs private is the product

NHS is a GP referral and a long-term loan. Usually BTE. The wait is local — weeks in one area, months in another — not a national figure.

Private is a package. Itemise the model, pair vs ear, trial, warranty, aftercare years, batteries vs charger, repairs, and the lost-aid fee. Do not compare an NHS loan to a private bundle as “savings”. One is free.

What the private bundle actually includes

  • Pair or ear: high-street UK quotes are per pair. A per-ear number is a different product.
  • Fitting: test plus first programming, in-store on the high-street packages.
  • Aftercare years: Specsavers-style packages usually quote aftercare plus a four-year warranty. Boots Hearingcare also pitches lifetime aftercare (3 Sep 2026) — get the years in writing. Audika / independent premium often sells lifetime as the pitch.
  • Trial: 90–100 days on the big high-street packages. Premium quotes 30–90 days — read the quote.
  • Rechargeable: an upgrade on the same private bundle, not a US OTC path. Specsavers from £1,000; Boots Hearingcare from £1,295 (3 Sep 2026).
  • Interest-free finance: spreads the bundle. It does not shrink it.

Who actually quotes an all-in pair

  • NHS (GP referral): free long-term loan after a GP referral.
  • Boots: the pharmacy on FindPrices. Hearingcare is the hearing brand; their prices page (3 Sep 2026) starts from £595 a pair, rechargeable from £1,295.
  • Specsavers Hearing: packages from £500 published, rechargeable from £1,000.
  • Audika (formerly Hidden Hearing): independent-style premium; older quotes still say Hidden Hearing.
  • Amplifon, Bloom (Tesco), independents: same all-in test — pair, fitting, aftercare years.
  • Online / remote (Hearing Direct and similar): mail-order pair, often needs your audiogram. Not US OTC.
