UK car batteries are sold as a box price. The bill is the box, plus fitting, plus coding on a stop-start car, plus what they do with the old one. A 096 standard and a 096 AGM are not the same product. Compare the fitted total for the type your car actually takes.
These are example ranges only, not surveyed or sourced 2026 prices. Own-brand high-street sits toward the bottom of a band; a named Bosch / Varta AGM at a fast-fit centre sits toward the top.
Example battery-only vs fitted, by size and type. Fitted here means the battery plus test plus fit plus taking the old one. Coding / registration on a stop-start car is in the fitted column only where the fitter includes it; if the quote says “plus coding”, add it before you compare.
Fitted assumptions (examples, not a tariff): battery + about £0–£40 labour (Kwik Fit online bundles fitting; Halfords often prices fitting on the side, from about £30). Old battery taken in at fit. No US core charge. VAT in. Coding extra if the quote says so (example £0–£40). Hybrid/EV high-voltage packs are not this page.
If you buy mail-order (Tayna and the like) the battery-only column is the bill until a garage adds labour. If you buy Kwik Fit online, their catalogue price is already the fitted column. Do not compare those two stickers as if they were the same number.
| Size | Type | Common on | Ex. battery only | Ex. fitted |

Every pound in that table is an example, not a sourced 2026 street price. Same physical size is the point of the three 096 rows. Kwik Fit online on 1 Sep 2026 (fitting included, VAT in) listed 096N at £144 and AGM096N at £243. That gap is type, not the fitter. Their page also listed 063N at £95 and 027N at £131; old-battery disposal is a small charge, and they will not book hybrid/EV batteries.
Leisure/caravan and hybrid/EV traction packs are not this table. Kwik Fit will not book those.
Fitting on an older hatch with the battery on top is minutes. Coding on stop-start is a workshop job. Skip coding and you get a warning light, a battery that never quite charges, or stop-start that stays off.
There is no US core deposit. Halfords take the old battery when they fit. Kwik Fit disposal is a small charge. Mail-order: you still have an old battery.
Free tests at Halfords and Kwik Fit. A flat battery after lights left on is often discharged, not dead. Warranty is part of the price — Kwik Fit 5-year on popular sizes (1 Sep 2026); minimum 2-year on the range.
Example only: 063 class often £80–£130 fitted; 096 standard £110–£170; 096 EFB £140–£210; 096 AGM £220–£290. Van/4x4 AGM higher. Example ranges only, not surveyed or sourced 2026 prices.
Only if the quote says so. Kwik Fit online includes fitting. Halfords often prices fitting on the side. Mail-order is battery-only until a garage adds labour.
Yes. EFB can step up to AGM. AGM cannot step down.
On a lot of newer cars the management system has to be told a new battery is in. If the fitter cannot code, you do not have a fitted price yet.
No.
Yes at Halfords and Kwik Fit on 12V starter batteries. Hybrid/EV traction packs are a different test.
On the box, often. On the fitted total, only after garage labour, coding, old battery.
