How Much Is a Gym Membership in Australia?

The weekly rate is not the bill. Joining fee, lock-in vs no-lock, then the 12-month all-in.

Also for: US · UK

Australian gyms sell a weekly number, billed by fortnightly direct debit. That number is not the bill. A joining fee, an access fob, and whether the plan is a 12-month lock-in or no-lock decide what the first year costs. Compare the 12-month all-in, not the weekly teaser.

These are example ranges only, not surveyed or sourced 2026 prices. Club-level quotes move with franchise, suburb, promo and whether you take lock-in. CBD full-service sits at the top of a band; a suburban 24/7 floor or a council concession sits at the bottom.

How much is a gym membership in Australia?

Example joining vs weekly vs 12-month all-in, in AUD. Lock-in is a minimum term (usually 12 months). No-lock is cancel-with-notice. The 12-month all-in on a no-lock row is what you would pay if you stayed a year, not a contract you owe if you leave in week six.

12-month all-in assumptions (examples, not a tariff): 52 × example weekly + example joining + access-pass/fob about example $0–$40 where used. Personal training is not in the cell. Direct debit is fortnightly (weekly × 2). If joining is waived, all-in drops by that one-off. If weekly is an intro that steps up, use the ongoing weekly in the all-in.

If a club waives joining in a promo (January, EOFY), the all-in drops by that one-off. If the weekly is an intro that steps up after 12 weeks, use the ongoing weekly in the all-in, not the teaser. The joining fee is not the bill.

Lock-in vs no-lock

Lock-in (minimum term, usually 12 months) is the cheaper weekly at Anytime, Goodlife and Fitness First. You pay that weekly for the term. Leave early and you are in a cancellation fee or the rest of the term — read the contract, don’t guess. The 12-month all-in on a lock-in row is the year you signed for, plus joining.

No-lock is the Jetts product, common at Plus Fitness, and sold at some Anytime / Goodlife clubs at a higher weekly. You give notice (often 14–28 days) and stop. The 12-month all-in on those rows is only useful if you actually stay. Six weeks of Jetts plus joining can beat a year of a “cheaper” lock-in you abandon in March.

Casual / visit packs at a council centre are a third product. Example $8–$18 a visit. They beat any membership if you go once a week. They lose if you go three times a week. They are not a weekly membership and they are not in the all-in column.

Direct debit and cancel

AU chains bill fortnightly direct debit, not the weekly they advertise and not a US monthly draft. Losing the fob, ghosting the club, or “I’ll cancel next month” does not stop the debit. Cancel in the app or in writing, keep the confirmation, and watch one more debit if you are inside a notice window.

Lock-in cancel before the term: expect a fee or the remaining weeks. No-lock: notice, then it stops. Some contracts include a short cooling-off (often days, written in the membership agreement). That is the contract and, in some sales, Australian Consumer Law — not a FindPrices promise. Annual admin or access fees exist at some full-service clubs; if the quote has one, add it to the all-in before you compare.

Personal training is extra. Example $50–$90 a session, or a PT pack on top of the membership. It is never inside the table.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a gym membership in Australia?

Example only, not a survey: a 24/7 floor (Jetts, Plus, some Anytime) is often around $10–$24 a week plus joining; Goodlife / Fitness First around $22–$38 a week plus a larger joining fee; council around $10–$22 a week, concession less. The 12-month all-in is joining + 52 × weekly (+ fob). See the table. These are example ranges only, not surveyed or sourced 2026 prices.

Is the joining fee the bill?

No. Joining is a one-off (example $0–$199, often waived). The bill is the weekly, usually taken fortnightly.

Is a 12-month lock-in cheaper than casual or no-lock?

Per week, usually yes. Per year, only if you stay the year. Compare the 12-month all-in AND the cost to leave.

Council vs a chain — which is cheaper?

Council leisure centres are often the cheapest 12-month all-in, especially on concession, usually no-lock, often a pool, not 24/7.

Is personal training included?

No. Boutique (F45) is a class product, not a PT add-on and not a 24/7 floor.

How do I cancel? Does the direct debit just stop?

No. Direct debit keeps running until the gym processes a cancel.

Do 24/7 budget gyms include classes and a pool?

Usually no.

Anytime vs Jetts vs Goodlife — what’s the actual difference on price?

Anytime: 24/7, franchise, often 12-month lock-in. Jetts: 24/7, no-lock, lower weekly. Goodlife: full-service, higher weekly, lock-in common.
